Ottawa drivers already share the highway with massive transport trucks rolling in and out of the capital, but if the autonomous vehicle industry has its way, those rigs could soon be driving themselves.
Kodiak AI, a self-driving truck startup, is aiming to launch fully driverless long-haul freight operations by the end of 2026. And its CEO, Don Burnette, recently made a candid admission: getting the trucks to drive themselves is only half the job.
The Tech Is (Almost) There
The autonomous trucking space has been quietly gaining steam. Aurora is planning to deploy hundreds of driverless big rigs, and Waabi, a Canadian AI company based in Toronto, has been expanding its own robotics platform into new territory. Kodiak AI is now joining that race, targeting driverless commercial freight by late 2026.
While most competitors are laser-focused on the AI stack, things like perception systems, sensor fusion, and mileage milestones. Burnette says Kodiak is thinking bigger. The real bottleneck, he argues, isn't making the trucks autonomous. It's building all the operational infrastructure around them: the terminals, the support networks, the commercial relationships, and the regulatory groundwork to make driverless freight a real business.
Why This Matters Beyond Silicon Valley
For Ottawa residents, this might sound like distant tech-industry noise. But Canada's capital sits at a crucial logistics crossroads. Highway 417 and the Trans-Canada corridor move enormous volumes of freight between Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces every single day.
Autonomous long-haul trucks would likely travel these same routes. That means Ottawa-area truck drivers, logistics workers, and warehousing staff could all be affected as the industry shifts. It also raises questions about road safety, infrastructure readiness, and how Canadian regulators will respond to a technology that's moving faster than most expected.
Canada has been cautiously watching the U.S. autonomous vehicle space, with provinces like Ontario running pilot programs for self-driving vehicles. Whether federal and provincial rules will be ready for fully commercial driverless freight by 2026 remains an open question.
Robotaxis Get the Headlines, Trucks Do the Work
One underappreciated reality: while Waymo robotaxis dominate tech media coverage, driverless trucks may actually have a clearer near-term business case. Highways are more predictable than city streets, routes are fixed, and the economic pressure to cut labour costs in freight is enormous.
Kodiak's Burnette is betting that whoever figures out the full-stack business, not just the AI, but the operations, will win the long game. That means building out truck stops, maintenance hubs, and handoff terminals where autonomous trucks transfer loads to local drivers for last-mile delivery.
The Road Ahead
Whether Kodiak hits its 2026 target or not, the direction is clear: autonomous trucks are coming to North American highways, and Ottawa's major corridors will almost certainly be part of that future. For local policymakers, transport workers, and businesses that rely on freight, it's worth paying attention now, before the trucks arrive on their own.
