Ottawa Wellness Entrepreneur Has Big Plans for a Historic Château
Ottawa's wellness and hospitality industries could be on the verge of a historic collision. Marc-André Cabana, the owner behind the wildly popular Spa Nordik — a Nordic spa destination that draws visitors from across the National Capital Region and beyond — has publicly revealed that purchasing Château Montebello would be a dream come true.
For those unfamiliar, Château Montebello is no ordinary property. Located roughly 130 kilometres west of Ottawa along the north shore of the Ottawa River in Montebello, Quebec, the château is one of Canada's most recognizable heritage hotels. Built in 1930 entirely from red cedar logs, it holds the distinction of being the world's largest log structure and has long been a bucket-list destination for travellers in this region.
A Natural Fit for the Spa Nordik Brand
The connection between Spa Nordik and Château Montebello isn't hard to see. Spa Nordik has built its reputation on delivering premium, nature-immersive relaxation experiences — the kind of unhurried, outdoor-centred wellness retreats that align perfectly with the Château's rustic grandeur and riverside setting.
For Ottawa-area residents who've made the drive out to Spa Nordik for a day of thermal pools and steam rooms, the idea of that same ethos expanding into an overnight, full-resort experience at Montebello is an enticing proposition. It would give the region something it currently lacks: a world-class, locally owned wellness resort destination just a short drive from the capital.
What It Would Mean for the Region
Château Montebello is currently operated by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, which has managed the property for decades. Any acquisition would be a significant undertaking — both financially and operationally — but Cabana's track record suggests he understands the market.
Spa Nordik itself has grown from a niche concept into a regional institution, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors annually and inspiring imitators across Ontario and Quebec. If that same entrepreneurial vision were applied to Montebello, the Ottawa River corridor could become one of Canada's premier wellness tourism destinations.
For Ottawa's broader economy, a locally driven revitalization of the Château could mean stronger regional tourism ties, new partnership opportunities for local food and beverage producers, and an enhanced profile for the National Capital Region as a year-round destination.
Still a Dream — But a Compelling One
Cabana has been candid that this remains a dream rather than a done deal. Acquiring a Fairmont-operated heritage property is no small feat, and no formal transaction has been announced. But the fact that he's talking about it publicly signals both ambition and serious intent.
For now, Ottawa-area residents can keep enjoying what Spa Nordik already offers — one of the finest Nordic spa experiences in Eastern Canada. But if this dream ever becomes reality, the region could be looking at something truly special just down the river.
