Scientists are sounding the alarm about SpaceX's plans to deploy up to one million satellites as part of an expanded Starlink constellation, a scale that researchers warn could permanently alter night sky visibility and cause atmospheric damage.

What SpaceX Is Planning

SpaceX has already launched thousands of Starlink satellites to provide global broadband internet access. The company has now applied to regulatory bodies to dramatically expand that constellation, potentially to one million satellites, a number that would dwarf the approximately 10,000 satellites currently orbiting Earth.

The business case is massive global internet coverage, including in remote areas where traditional infrastructure doesn't reach. But scientists argue the environmental and astronomical costs are being seriously underestimated.

The Threat to Dark Skies

Astronomers have already documented the impact of current Starlink satellites on telescope observations. With a million satellites in orbit, the night sky as humans have known it throughout history could be fundamentally altered, a steady stream of satellite trails crossing every long-exposure image and potentially visible to the naked eye in large numbers.

For Canada's world-class observatories and for amateur astronomers in communities across the country, this represents a real threat to one of humanity's oldest connections with the natural world.

The Ottawa and Ontario Angle

Ontario has a proud dark sky preserve tradition. The award-winning Killarney Provincial Park dark sky preserve, the McDonald Observatory-affiliated dark sky parks, and numerous sites in eastern Ontario accessible from Ottawa draw stargazers seeking to escape the city's light pollution.

Ottawa itself is home to the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory and the National Research Council's astronomical research programs, institutions with a deep stake in preserving the quality of the observational environment both locally and globally.

Atmospheric Concerns

Beyond dark skies, scientists are raising concerns about the atmospheric impact of burning satellites. As satellites deorbit and burn up in the atmosphere at the end of their lives, they release metallic particles that may affect stratospheric chemistry, ozone layer recovery, and climate dynamics in ways that haven't been fully studied.

Regulators in Canada, the US, and internationally are being called on to set limits on satellite constellation sizes before the deployment reaches a scale that is difficult to reverse.
