The Plan That's Got Astronomers Losing Sleep
SpaceX has put forward a proposal that would fundamentally change the night sky as we know it: launching one million satellites into Earth's orbit. And the scientific community, including researchers at Canadian universities, is deeply concerned.
Right now, there are roughly 10,000 active satellites circling the planet. SpaceX's Starlink constellation already accounts for thousands of those. But a million? That's a number that would turn the night sky into something unrecognizable.
What's Actually at Stake
The concerns fall into two broad categories: what happens up in the atmosphere, and what happens down here on Earth.
Scientists studying light pollution say that a million satellites would make truly dark skies nearly impossible anywhere on the planet. Professional observatories, including ones used by Canadian researchers, would be severely impacted, with satellite streaks cutting through long-exposure images and disrupting data collection.
But the atmospheric concern might be even more serious. When satellites de-orbit and burn up, they release aluminium oxide and other compounds. At current volumes this is manageable. At a million satellites, the cumulative effect on the upper atmosphere is genuinely unknown, and some researchers say the risk of ozone layer damage is real.
Canada's Stake in the Sky
Canada has long been a nation with an eye on the stars. From the dark sky preserves in Ontario to research stations in the Arctic, the ability to see stars clearly isn't just scientific. It's cultural. Several Canadian astronomers have signed open letters calling on international regulators to establish binding limits on satellite constellation sizes.
No Brakes in Sight
There's no international body with authority to simply say no. SpaceX argues the satellites are essential for global broadband access, a goal many Canadians in rural areas benefit from directly. That tension between connectivity and conservation is at the heart of the debate.
