Ottawa has a new name to celebrate: Jason York, the Nepean-raised defenceman who spent some of his best NHL years protecting the Senators' blue line, is being inducted into the Ottawa Sport Hall of Fame — and he's feeling every bit of it.

"It's a really big honour," York said of the recognition, a sentiment that'll resonate with any Senators fan who watched him log steady, reliable minutes through the early 2000s.

A Homegrown Blueliner

York's story is a local one through and through. Growing up in Nepean — now part of Ottawa's west end — he came up through the same community rinks and minor hockey programs that produce so many players in this hockey-mad city. Making it to the NHL is one thing; doing it while suiting up for your hometown team is something else entirely.

As a fixture on the Senators' blue line during his time in Ottawa, York was exactly the kind of dependable, two-way defenceman that championship-calibre teams are built around. He wasn't always the guy making highlight reels, but coaches, teammates, and fans knew what they had in him: a professional who showed up, competed, and made the players around him better.

What the Hall of Fame Means

The Ottawa Sport Hall of Fame exists to recognize exactly this kind of career — athletes and builders who made lasting contributions to sport in the city, whether on the national stage or right here in the community. For a kid from Nepean who went on to play in the NHL, an induction like this closes a circle in a meaningful way.

For many inductees, the local recognition carries a different emotional weight than anything earned on the road. Ottawa is home. The Hall of Fame is home. That combination hits differently.

Ottawa's Hockey Legacy

York's induction is also a reminder of just how deep Ottawa's hockey roots run. Long before the modern Senators era, this city was producing NHL talent and hosting historic franchises. Today, with the Senators back in the playoff conversation and a PWHL team drawing passionate crowds, Ottawa's identity as a hockey city is as strong as ever.

Recognizing players like York — locals who came up through the community system, reached the highest level, and gave something back — is how that legacy gets passed down. Kids playing minor hockey in Nepean, Barrhaven, or Kanata this winter will see York's name in the Hall and know it's possible.

"A really big honour" is about as modest as you'd expect from a defenceman who spent his career doing the unglamorous work. But for Ottawa sports fans, this one feels well-earned.
