Spring in Ottawa means one thing for cyclists: the NCC pathways are open again. Over 700 km of maintained multi-use pathways thread through the National Capital Region, linking neighbourhoods, parks, and points of interest in a way that makes Ottawa one of the best cycling cities in Canada.
Here's your guide to making the most of the network this spring.
The Classics
Rideau Canal Pathway: The signature Ottawa cycling route. Flat, scenic, and running from Carleton University all the way to the locks at the Ottawa River, the Canal pathway is perfect for leisurely rides at any fitness level. Spring is especially atmospheric, with ducks returning and the canal infrastructure slowly coming to life.
Ottawa River Pathway: For a longer ride, the Ottawa River pathway runs east-west along both banks of the river. The Quebec side (particularly through Gatineau Park) offers the more natural experience; the Ontario side runs through riverside parks and past major landmarks.
Gatineau Park (Quebec): For more challenging terrain, Gatineau Park's road network and multi-use paths offer genuine hills and excellent views. The Champlain Parkway in particular is a local cyclist favourite.
Neighbourhood Routes
Westboro to the Glebe via the Canal is a classic commuter route. Barrhaven to Carleton via the Jock River and Centrepointe is a solid suburban-to-core option. Orleans to the Rideau River trail is underappreciated for how quiet and beautiful it gets east of the core.
Getting Ready
Check your tires before heading out, spring sand on Ottawa's roads is tough on bike tires. The Canal pathway often has debris after the winter melt; the first few weeks of spring mean watching for gravel patches. Helmets are legally required in Ontario.
