In the Garden: Celebrate Spring With Ottawa's Tulips

Ottawa's Favourite Sign of Spring Has Arrived

Ottawa gardeners know the feeling well — that first glimpse of tulip shoots pushing through cold soil is basically the city's unofficial announcement that winter is finally done. Every spring, tulips transform Ottawa's yards, parks, and public spaces into a riot of colour, and this year is no different.

Tulips have a special place in Ottawa's identity. The Canadian Tulip Festival, one of the largest tulip festivals in the world, traces its roots back to a gift of 100,000 tulip bulbs from the Netherlands after the Second World War — a thank-you for Canada sheltering the Dutch royal family and liberating the Netherlands. That tradition has grown into a beloved annual celebration that draws visitors from across the country to Commissioners Park and Dow's Lake every May.

Getting the Most From Your Tulip Garden

If you planted bulbs last fall, now's the time to watch your work pay off. Tulips planted in Ottawa's climate generally bloom from late April through mid-May, depending on the variety and the year's weather patterns. Early-season varieties tend to pop first, followed by mid-season and late-blooming types that can extend colour well into the month.

A few tips to keep your tulips looking their best:

  • Don't cut the foliage too early. Once blooms fade, leave the leaves in place for at least six weeks so the bulb can store energy for next year's flowers.
  • Deadhead spent blooms to direct the plant's energy back into the bulb rather than seed production.
  • Water moderately — Ottawa's spring rains usually handle most of the work, but a dry spell calls for a deep soak once or twice a week.
  • Consider naturalizing with perennial varieties like Darwin Hybrids, which reliably return year after year rather than fading after one season.

Where to See Tulips in Ottawa This Spring

You don't need a garden to enjoy the season. Commissioners Park along Dow's Lake is the crown jewel, with roughly 300,000 tulips planted each year across its sweeping beds. The National Capital Commission also plants thousands of bulbs throughout the capital region, including along Colonel By Drive and in many neighbourhood parks.

For a more intimate experience, stroll through the Central Experimental Farm's ornamental gardens, where heritage varieties mix with modern hybrids in a setting that feels worlds away from the city bustle.

Planning for Next Fall

If this season has you inspired to plant your own display, the time to act is fall — ideally between late September and early November in Ottawa, before the ground freezes solid. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil, plant bulbs about 15–20 cm deep, and you'll be rewarded come next April.

Local nurseries and garden centres across the city typically stock a wide selection of bulbs each autumn, including some of the specialty and heirloom varieties that make a garden truly stand out.

Spring in Ottawa only lasts so long — get outside and enjoy every petal while it's here.
