Ottawa drivers are being reminded of the very real dangers of street racing after two motorists were caught speeding at 125 km/h on a local road, according to a report from CTV News.

The two vehicles were spotted racing side-by-side — a manoeuvre that puts not only the drivers at risk, but every other person sharing the road with them. At 125 km/h, well above the typical 60–80 km/h limit on most Ottawa arterial roads, a driver has drastically reduced reaction time and stopping distance.

What Happened

Ottawa police observed the two vehicles travelling at high speed and identified them as participating in what's known as a street race — where two drivers compete informally on public roads. The incident was flagged by officers, and both drivers face potential charges under Ontario's Highway Traffic Act.

Street racing charges in Ontario carry serious consequences. Under the province's stunt driving laws, drivers caught going 50 km/h or more over the posted speed limit can face immediate roadside licence suspension, vehicle impoundment, and fines in the thousands of dollars — in addition to criminal charges if warranted.

A Growing Concern in Ottawa

Street racing is not a new problem in Ottawa, but incidents like this one serve as a stark reminder of how quickly a reckless decision can turn fatal. Ottawa's wider roads and overnight stretches of quiet arterials — particularly in areas like the south end, Kanata, and along Innes Road — have historically attracted drivers looking to push their vehicles.

Local residents and advocacy groups have repeatedly called on city officials and police to increase enforcement and install more speed cameras on roads prone to this kind of behaviour. Ottawa did expand its automated speed enforcement camera program in recent years, with cameras now operating in school zones and community safety zones across the city.

What the Law Says

Under Ontario's stunt driving legislation, racing another vehicle is explicitly listed as a stunt — regardless of what speed the vehicles are travelling at. That means even if both drivers had been going the speed limit, the act of racing itself is illegal.

For a first-time offender, stunt driving can result in:

  • An immediate 30-day licence suspension at the roadside
  • Vehicle impoundment for 14 days
  • Fines ranging from $2,000 to $10,000
  • Up to six demerit points
  • Possible jail time of up to six months

Repeat offenders face even harsher penalties, including longer licence suspensions and higher fines.

A Reminder for Ottawa Drivers

With summer arriving and roads getting busier, Ottawa police are urging all drivers to slow down and respect posted speed limits. Pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists all share the road — and aggressive driving puts every one of them at risk.

If you witness dangerous driving behaviour in Ottawa, you can report it to Ottawa Police Service non-emergency at 613-236-1222.
