Ottawa's Favourite Outdoor Program Gets a New Home This Summer

Ottawa's Street Seats program is making its warm-weather return, and this year it's bringing a fresh wave of energy to not just Centretown but also the historic stretch of Somerset Street West that makes up the city's beloved Chinatown.

The program, which transforms on-street parking spaces and sidewalk areas into small outdoor seating zones, has become a fixture of Ottawa's summer streetscape over the past few years. Locals have come to expect the little parklets and patio extensions popping up outside cafés, restaurants, and shops as soon as the weather turns.

What Is Street Seats?

Street Seats is a City of Ottawa initiative that allows businesses and community organizations to temporarily convert curb lanes, parking spots, or other street-level spaces into outdoor seating areas. Think moveable chairs and tables, planters, and sometimes a little shade structure — all designed to make pedestrians want to slow down, sit down, and stay a while.

The concept took root during the pandemic years as a way to help struggling restaurants survive by expanding their outdoor capacity. It worked so well that Ottawa kept it going, and the program has only grown since.

Expanding into Chinatown

This season's expansion into Chinatown is significant. Somerset Street West is already one of Ottawa's most walkable and culturally rich corridors, home to a dense mix of Vietnamese restaurants, bubble tea shops, Chinese grocery stores, and longtime community institutions. Adding Street Seats locations to the mix could make an already lively strip feel even more like the kind of neighbourhood destination people build their weekends around.

Local business owners along both Centretown and Chinatown corridors have been enthusiastic supporters of the program, noting that the added outdoor presence makes nearby areas feel more vibrant and welcoming — which, in turn, draws more customers.

Why It Matters for the Neighbourhood

There's something powerful about reclaiming street space for people rather than cars. When a parking spot becomes a spot for two friends to share a bowl of pho or a family to rest after a morning at the market, it changes how a street feels. It signals that a neighbourhood is alive.

For Ottawa's downtown core, which has continued to rebuild foot traffic and retail energy since the pandemic, every initiative that encourages people to linger and explore matters. Street Seats does exactly that — it makes the street itself a destination, not just a corridor you pass through.

When and Where

While specific locations and launch dates are still being confirmed for the 2026 season, the program traditionally runs from late spring through early fall, aligning with Ottawa's best outdoor weather. Keep an eye on the City of Ottawa's website and local BIA newsletters for the full list of participating businesses and new parklet locations as they're announced.

If last year was any indication, the spots fill up fast on sunny evenings — so make a plan to check out both the Centretown and Chinatown stretches once they're up and running.
