Ottawa Students Protest OSAP Overhaul
Dozens of high school students in Ottawa's east end walked out of class Tuesday to push back against proposed changes to Ontario's student financial aid program, saying the new plan could leave future post-secondary students graduating with far more debt.
Students from local east-end schools gathered outside an MPP's office, holding signs and chanting as they urged the provincial government to reconsider the OSAP overhaul.
What is Changing With OSAP
Under the current system, a significant portion of OSAP funding comes through grants that students do not have to repay. The proposed changes would shift much of that support to loans, meaning many students would graduate owing substantially more money. Students say this disproportionately hurts those from lower-income families.
The Government's Position
The Ontario government argues the adjustments are needed to keep the program financially sustainable. Critics counter that the shift to loans creates a real barrier to access, particularly as living costs in Ottawa and other major cities continue to climb.
More Protests Expected
Wednesday's walkout was part of broader student organizing across Ontario. Whether the provincial government responds to the pressure or proceeds with the changes will directly affect how affordable higher education remains for Ottawa students.
