Best Sunglasses for Your Ottawa Summer Road Trip
Ottawa is one of the best cities in Canada to launch a summer road trip — whether you're heading north into Algonquin Park, east toward Montreal, or south down through Prince Edward County's wine country. But before you queue up the playlist and back out of the driveway, there's one piece of gear worth thinking carefully about: your sunglasses.
It sounds small. It isn't. Hours behind the wheel on a bright Ontario summer day means serious UV exposure, glare off wet pavement and open water, and the kind of eye fatigue that creeps up on you long before you notice it. The right pair of shades makes the whole drive better — and the wrong pair can leave you squinting all the way to Huntsville.
Polarized Lenses Are Non-Negotiable for Highway Driving
If you're spending time on the 417 or the 401, polarized lenses are worth every extra dollar. They cut the horizontal glare that bounces off roads, lakes, and other cars — the kind of blinding flash that standard tinted lenses can't fully block. For anyone doing long stretches through eastern Ontario's flat, sun-drenched farmland, polarized is the way to go.
Look for lenses rated UV400 or higher, which block 99–100% of both UVA and UVB rays. This applies to budget pairs too — UV protection is about lens coating, not price point.
Lens Colour Matters More Than You Think
Different tints serve different conditions:
- Grey/smoke lenses are the all-rounder — they reduce brightness without distorting colour, ideal for open-highway driving under a clear sky.
- Brown or amber lenses boost contrast and work beautifully in mixed light — great if your route takes you through shaded forest roads in Gatineau Park or along the Rideau Lakes.
- Yellow lenses are low-light specialists. Not ideal for peak afternoon sun, but useful for early morning departures or overcast days.
Frame Fit for Long Drives
You'll be wearing these for hours. Frames that pinch at the temples or slide down your nose stop being charming after the first hour outside of Kanata. Look for a snug but not tight fit, wraparound or semi-wraparound coverage to block peripheral glare, and lightweight materials — TR90 nylon or titanium frames are popular choices for exactly this reason.
If you wear prescription glasses, clip-on polarized covers or prescription sunglasses are worth the investment. Struggling with contact lenses on a dusty gravel road outside of Carleton Place is nobody's idea of a good time.
What to Pack Alongside Your Sunglasses
Even the best pair needs backup. Bring a hard case — a loose pair in the cupholder won't survive a panic stop. Pack a microfibre cloth because fingerprints and road grime accumulate fast. And if you have a sunroof or convertible, consider a second budget pair in the glovebox as a spare.
Don't Leave Without Them
Ottawa summers are genuinely bright — we get more sunshine hours than Vancouver between May and September — and the drives out of the city are stunning but sun-drenched. A solid pair of sunglasses is as essential as a full tank of gas.
