Driver Suspended Since 2023 Caught Behind the Wheel on Ottawa Highway: OPP

Ottawa-area Ontario Provincial Police made a notable traffic stop this week after pulling over a vehicle on a highway near the city and discovering the driver had been prohibited from operating a motor vehicle since 2023.

OPP officers conducted the stop as part of routine highway patrols — the kind of enforcement presence that keeps Ottawa's major road corridors safer for commuters and commercial traffic alike. When officers ran the driver's licence through their system, the results raised an immediate red flag: the individual's driving privileges had been suspended years earlier and remained fully in effect at the time of the stop.

What a Licence Suspension Means

In Ontario, a suspended licence isn't a minor administrative hiccup. Drivers can be suspended for a range of reasons — unpaid fines, demerit point accumulation, Criminal Code convictions, or medical grounds. Regardless of the cause, getting behind the wheel while suspended is a serious offence under the Highway Traffic Act.

Convictions can carry fines ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 for a first offence, and repeat offenders face escalating penalties including potential jail time. The vehicle may also be impounded, adding towing and storage costs on top of the fines.

OPP Enforcement on Ottawa Highways

The Ottawa detachment of the OPP is responsible for patrolling provincial highways in and around the National Capital Region, including stretches of Highway 417, Highway 7, and other key routes that feed traffic into and out of the city. Officers regularly conduct RIDE spot-checks, distracted driving blitzes, and general traffic enforcement operations.

Officials note that suspended drivers are a persistent concern on Ontario roads. Unlike impaired driving, which often requires observable behaviour before a stop, suspended licences are only discovered once officers run a plate or interact directly with a driver — meaning many suspended motorists go undetected for extended periods.

In this case, the driver had reportedly been suspended since 2023, suggesting the individual continued to use their vehicle for what may have been years before being caught.

What Happens Next

The driver was charged under the Highway Traffic Act and the vehicle was removed from the scene. OPP did not release the identity of the accused, in keeping with standard practice for HTA matters that don't involve injury or criminal charges.

For Ottawa residents, the stop is a reminder that OPP are actively checking for suspended and unlicensed drivers on local highways — not just during dedicated enforcement campaigns, but as a routine part of patrol work.

If you're unsure of your licence status, Ontario residents can check online through ServiceOntario or by visiting a DriveTest centre. Driving while suspended — even if the original suspension feels like old news — remains a chargeable offence every single time you get behind the wheel.
