Tragedy on the Ottawa River
Ottawa is mourning the loss of a two-year-old child who died Friday evening after being pulled from the Ottawa River, according to Ottawa Police Service.
Authorities responded to the scene Friday evening after the toddler was found in the water. Despite emergency responders' efforts, the child did not survive. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Few additional details have been released as the investigation remains in its early stages and out of respect for the family, who are facing an unimaginable loss.
A Reminder of Water Safety
The Ottawa River stretches hundreds of kilometres and borders much of the city, drawing families to its banks throughout the spring and summer months. Parks, pathways, and beaches along the river are popular destinations for Ottawa residents — but the waterway can be unpredictable and dangerous, particularly for young children.
Water safety advocates consistently remind parents and caregivers to maintain close supervision of children near any body of water, including rivers, pools, and even shallow streams. Toddlers can get into difficulty in water very quickly and silently, making direct, arms-reach supervision critical.
The Lifesaving Society of Canada recommends that children under five years old always be within arm's reach of an adult near water, and that young children wear properly fitted personal flotation devices when near open water.
Community Impact
Friday's tragedy is a heartbreaking reminder of the risks that Ottawa's natural waterways can pose, especially during warmer months when more families spend time outdoors near the river.
Ottawa's river access points — from Petrie Island to Britannia Beach and Westboro Beach — are beloved community spaces, but city officials and safety organizations continue to stress that vigilance around water is non-negotiable, especially with young children.
Residents and community members have expressed grief and sympathy for the family following news of the toddler's death. Local authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to contact Ottawa Police.
