Ottawa is one of the best cities in the world to embrace winter, and if you've been sleeping on a cold-weather weekend trip to the capital, consider this your wake-up call.
Whether you're visiting from out of town or finally making plans to explore your own backyard, Ottawa's winter scene is genuinely world-class. Here's how to pack a weekend full of icy, cozy, and delicious experiences.
Start on the Rideau Canal
No Ottawa winter itinerary is complete without lacing up on the Rideau Canal Skateway, the world's largest naturally frozen skating rink, stretching 7.8 kilometres through the heart of the city. Rent skates near one of the pavilions if you don't have your own, and stop for a BeaverTail pastry and hot chocolate along the way. It's the quintessential Ottawa winter experience.
The Canal is typically open from January through February, weather permitting, always check the National Capital Commission's daily ice condition report before heading out.
Winterlude at Jacques-Cartier Park
If your visit lines up with Winterlude (usually early February), head across the river to Gatineau's Jacques-Cartier Park for the International Ice Sculpture Competition. The massive, intricate sculptures are genuinely jaw-dropping and completely free to walk through. Bundle up. You'll want to linger.
Back on the Ottawa side, the snowflake kingdom and family activities make this one of Canada's most beloved winter festivals.
Explore Lansdowne and the Glebe
Warm up with a stroll through the Glebe neighbourhood. Pop into independent shops along Bank Street, grab a coffee at one of the cozy cafés, and check out what's on at Lansdowne Park. TD Place often hosts OHL Ottawa 67's games in winter, a fun, affordable live sports experience.
Hit the Hills at Camp Fortune or Edelweiss
Just 30 minutes from downtown, the Gatineau Hills offer solid skiing and snowboarding at Camp Fortune or Edelweiss Valley. These aren't Whistler, but they're perfect for a quick half-day on the slopes without a long drive. Rentals are available on-site.
Cozy Eats and Après-Winter Vibes
Ottawa's food scene shines in winter. Warm up at The Arrow & the Loon in the ByWard Market area for local craft beer and hearty pub fare, or head to Fauna for something more refined. If you're after poutine, and after a day on the ice, you will be. Smoke's Poutinerie and The Chip Stand near Dow's Lake are local staples.
For a splurge, book dinner at Atelier or Fraser Restaurant, two of Ottawa's most acclaimed spots.
