Ottawa's most iconic winter experience has come to an end. The Rideau Canal Skateway officially closed for the 2025–26 season on Wednesday, March 4 at 10 pm, marking the end of a 56-day run that thrilled thousands of skaters from across the city and around the world.
56 Days on the Ice
The skateway, recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's largest naturally frozen ice rink, delivered another memorable season. Skaters made their way along the full 7.8 km stretch from the Hartwell Locks to the National Arts Centre, stopping for iconic BeaverTails and hot chocolate along the way.
The 2025–26 season was a good one. Ottawa got enough consistent cold snaps to keep the ice in solid condition for most of the run, allowing the National Capital Commission (NCC) to maintain safe skating conditions across the canal.
Why It Closes When It Does
The NCC monitors ice thickness daily throughout the winter. The skateway requires a minimum of 30 cm of ice to open and remain operational. As temperatures rise in late February and early March, maintaining that threshold becomes increasingly difficult, and the season typically wraps up in early March.
This year was no exception. With milder weather moving in, the NCC made the call to close on March 4, giving skaters one final evening to lace up and glide along one of Canada's most breathtaking natural rinks.
One Last Skate
If you didn't get a chance to hit the ice this season, don't worry, the Rideau Canal will be back next winter. In the meantime, the canal pathway transforms into a beautiful walking and cycling route as the ice melts and spring arrives.
