A New Home for Halifax's Queer Community
Gottingen Street has long been one of Halifax's most vibrant and culturally significant corridors, and it's about to become home to a new chapter in the city's queer nightlife scene. Backlot HFX is a new two-storey venue created by Michael Gouthro, designed with the city's LGBTQ+ community in mind.
Gouthro says his vision for the space is inclusive and wide-ranging, something for everyone, whether that means dancing late into the night, catching a drag show, attending a community event, or simply having a drink in a space that feels welcoming and affirming.
Why Gottingen Street?
Gottingen Street holds a special place in Halifax's identity. The North End thoroughfare has historically been a hub of arts, culture, and community, home to independent businesses, music venues, and some of the city's most interesting street life.
For the queer community specifically, having a dedicated space on Gottingen feels like a homecoming of sorts. Queer venues and spaces provide more than just entertainment. They serve as community anchors, safe spaces, and gathering points where people can be themselves without reservation.
Two Floors of Possibility
The two-storey format of Backlot HFX gives the venue flexibility that a single-room bar doesn't have. Events can be split across floors, allowing for different atmospheres simultaneously, a quieter lounge on one level and a livelier dance floor on another, for instance.
This kind of versatility is increasingly important for venues that want to serve a broad community, from younger folks discovering queer spaces for the first time to long-time community members looking for a comfortable regular hangout.
Queer Nightlife's Place in the City
Queer bars and nightlife venues have faced significant pressure in recent decades, with many cities across North America seeing closures as gentrification, changing social norms, and economic pressures take their toll. The opening of a new dedicated queer venue is genuinely noteworthy, a signal that there's still strong community demand for physical gathering spaces.
