CRA My Account is the Canada Revenue Agency's online portal for individual taxpayers. Once you register, it becomes your central hub for everything tax and benefit related in Canada. If you haven't set it up yet, do it today. It takes about 15 minutes.

What CRA My Account Actually Does

Most people think of it as just a place to check tax refunds. It's much more than that:

  • View and download all your T slips (T4, T5, T3, RRSP receipts)
  • Check your RRSP and TFSA contribution room
  • See your benefit and credit payment history (CCB, GST/HST credit)
  • Update your address, banking details, and marital status
  • Auto-fill your tax return using your actual CRA data
  • Request a proof of income letter (often needed for housing or immigration)
  • Set up direct deposit for refunds and benefits
  • View your Notice of Assessment after filing
  • File an adjustment if you made an error on a previous return

How to Register

Go to canada.ca and search "CRA My Account." There are two ways to register:

Option 1, Sign-In Partner: If you bank with a major Canadian bank (TD, RBC, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC, etc.), you can log in using your online banking credentials. This is the fastest method.

Option 2, CRA Registration: Enter your SIN, date of birth, and information from a previous tax return (or current-year tax slip if it's your first return). The CRA mails you an activation code within 5–10 business days.

Setting Up Direct Deposit

This is the single most important thing to do once you're in. Go to "Direct deposit" in your account and enter your Canadian bank account details. Every refund and benefit payment, including the Canada Child Benefit and GST credit, will deposit directly without waiting for a cheque.

Auto-Fill My Return

When you file using certified tax software, you can connect it to CRA My Account and pull all your T slips automatically. This prevents errors and saves time, especially useful if you have multiple slips or changed jobs during the year.

Checking Your TFSA Room

New to Canada and wondering how much you can contribute to a Tax-Free Savings Account? Your TFSA contribution room accumulates from the year you turn 18 or arrive in Canada, whichever is later. CRA My Account shows your current available room.

Ottawa-Specific Benefit

Ottawa has a large population of federal public servants and contractors. If you work for the Government of Canada, your pay, pension adjustments, and T4s all flow through the CRA system and are visible in My Account. It's also the place to track your Public Service Pension Plan contribution data reflected on your tax slips.

Stay Secure

Never share your CRA login credentials. The CRA will never call or email you asking for your My Account password. If you receive such a request, it's a scam, report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

Registering for CRA My Account is one of the highest-return 15 minutes you can spend as a newcomer to Canada.
