Steel City Gets a Steel-Tough Name

Hamilton, Ontario has a new hockey team, and its name couldn't be more on-brand for the city. The American Hockey League's newest franchise will be called the Hamilton Hammers, with the team unveiling its name and logo Thursday at TD Coliseum — the arena that will serve as its home starting this October.

The reveal drew a crowd of excited fans who have been waiting months for this moment since the AHL's board of governors approved the relocation of the Bridgeport Islanders from Connecticut to Hamilton back in March.

From Bridgeport to the Hammer

The Bridgeport Islanders, the AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders, had called Connecticut home for years. But with the NHL's Islanders now settled into their new UBS Arena in New York and fan attendance challenges lingering in Bridgeport, the move to Canada made sense. Hamilton, with its fierce hockey culture and a modern, centrally located arena, was a natural fit.

The new name — the Hammers — is a direct nod to Hamilton's deep industrial identity. Long known as Canada's Steel City, Hamilton built its reputation on manufacturing and hard work, and the Hammers branding leans fully into that heritage. It's the kind of name that resonates with locals: gritty, earned, and unmistakably Hamilton.

TD Coliseum: The New Home of AHL Hockey in Hamilton

The team will play its home games at FirstOntario Centre — also referred to as TD Coliseum in the announcement context — a venue already well-acquainted with professional hockey. The arena previously hosted the Hamilton Bulldogs, the AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens, who relocated to Laval, Quebec in 2017 to become the Laval Rocket. For the better part of a decade, Hamilton has been without a top-tier pro hockey presence, and the Hammers are poised to fill that void.

With a population pushing 600,000 and a passionate fan base that's hungry for hockey, Hamilton is exactly the kind of Canadian market the AHL has been eyeing for expansion and relocation.

What This Means for Ontario Hockey

The addition of the Hammers strengthens Ontario's AHL footprint considerably. The province already hosts the Toronto Marlies, the Belleville Senators (Ottawa's own AHL affiliate), the Utica Comets (who play cross-border but draw Ontario fans), and now Hamilton. For hockey fans across the Golden Horseshoe, that means more opportunities to watch elite prospects work their way up to the NHL — often for a fraction of the price of a big-league ticket.

For Senators fans specifically, the Hammers could become a familiar rivalry fixture. The Belleville Senators and the Hammers will share division play, meaning Ottawa fans may want to keep an eye on how the new franchise develops its roster.

Mark Your Calendars

The Hamilton Hammers are set to drop the puck for their inaugural season this October. Ticket and schedule details are expected to follow in the coming weeks as the organization ramps up for its first season in the Hammer.

It's a big deal for Canadian hockey, and for Hamilton — a city that has always deserved a team worthy of its name.
