Canadian Income Tax Explained for Newcomers: Your First Return

Filing taxes in Canada for the first time can feel overwhelming, especially when you're still learning how the system works. The good news: Canada's tax system is designed to be manageable, and filing on time often means money back in your pocket.

Why You Must File, Even If You Earned Little

In Canada, most residents are required to file a tax return with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) by April 30 each year for the previous calendar year. Even if you had low income or only arrived partway through the year, filing is critical. It unlocks benefits like the GST/HST Credit and Canada Child Benefit.

How the Tax Year Works

The Canadian tax year runs January 1 to December 31. If you arrived in Canada in, say, September 2025, you would file a return in spring 2026 covering only your income from your arrival date onward. You become a Canadian tax resident the day you arrive with the intent to stay.

What Income You Must Report

All income earned in Canada must be reported: employment wages, self-employment income, tips, rental income, and investment income. Your employer will give you a T4 slip summarizing your employment earnings. You may also receive T3, T5, or other slips depending on your financial activity.

Understanding Federal and Provincial Tax

Canada uses a federal-plus-provincial tax system. Everyone pays federal tax to the CRA, and on top of that you pay provincial tax depending on where you live. In Ottawa, you pay Ontario provincial tax. The combined rate on a modest income is lower than many newcomers expect, and both levels of government offer credits that reduce what you owe.

The Deadline and Penalties

The filing deadline is April 30. If you owe taxes and file late, you face a 5% penalty on the balance owing plus 1% per month it remains unfiled. If you're owed a refund, there's no penalty for filing late, but you'll wait longer for your money.

Your First Return: Step by Step

  1. Gather all your T slips (T4, T5, etc.), employers mail these by the end of February.
  2. Create a CRA My Account online at canada.ca.
  3. Use free tax software certified for NETFILE (see our NETFILE guide).
  4. Enter your information, review your refund or balance, and submit electronically.
  5. Refunds are typically deposited within two weeks if you have direct deposit set up.

Ottawa-Specific Note

Settlement agencies in Ottawa like OCISO (Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization) and the Ottawa Public Library run free tax clinics each spring through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). Volunteers prepare returns for free for people with modest incomes. Check ottawa.ca for clinic dates starting in February.

Filing your first return opens the door to hundreds or even thousands of dollars in annual benefits. Don't skip it.
