It's not just a matter of imprecise readings, some monitors have been formally recalled after testing showed they failed to detect radon accurately. Health Canada has flagged several consumer devices that either underreported radon levels or gave readings with such wide variability that they were effectively useless for making safety decisions.
The concern is real: a homeowner who buys a faulty monitor, sees a "safe" reading, and takes no further action could be living in a home with dangerously elevated radon levels without knowing it.
What Experts Recommend
So how do you avoid buying a dud? Health Canada and radon testing professionals offer a few key guidelines:
