Scott Pilgrim at 20: A New Game Arrives
Canada's most famous fictional slacker is back on the streets of Toronto. Bryan Lee O'Malley, the cartoonist behind the beloved Scott Pilgrim comic series, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life with the release of Scott Pilgrim EX, a brand-new retro-styled beat-'em-up video game developed by Montreal-based indie studio Tribute Games.
The game launches in March 2026 and reunites fans with Scott and Ramona as they brawl their way through a fictionalized version of Toronto, complete with time-travel elements and recognizable local landmarks like Sneaky Dee's and a nod to the now-demolished Honest Ed's.
A Fuller Creative Vision
O'Malley has been candid about the limitations of the 2011 original, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game, which faced production troubles after Ubisoft relocated development from Montreal to Chengdu, China, resulting in features being cut and the creative vision compromised. EX is intended to be a more complete realization of what the game could have been.
"We didn't get to properly say goodbye to that original game," O'Malley said.
For fans, EX is a homecoming of sorts, a chance to revisit a world that has meant a lot to a generation of Canadians who grew up with the comics.
Gameplay and Mechanics
Narrative director Yannick Belzil described the appeal of the beat-'em-up genre as rooted in shared experience: "For me and a lot of us, they carry a big feeling of co-op playing." The team drew on classics like River City Ransom (1989) for its nonlinear Toronto exploration, and fighting mechanics borrow inspiration from Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom.
The studio even consulted real martial arts practitioners to ensure character movesets felt authentic, lending the game a physicality that goes beyond simple button-mashing.
A Franchise That Keeps Growing
What started as an indie comic out of Toronto has grown into a full multimedia franchise. Since the original book debuted in 2004, the Scott Pilgrim universe has expanded into a cult-favourite 2010 film directed by Edgar Wright, a 2023 Netflix anime series, and now two video games.
"If I was 12, I would want to do a movie, and an anime, and a video game," O'Malley reflected, a sentiment that captures the joyful, nerdy ambition that has always defined the project.
Toronto as Character
One of the enduring charms of Scott Pilgrim is its loving portrayal of Toronto, the Annex, Kensington Market, and the city's indie music scene are woven into the DNA of the story. EX continues that tradition, letting players explore a version of the city that is simultaneously familiar and fantastical.
For Canadians who have followed Scott Pilgrim's misadventures since the early 2000s, EX arrives as both a nostalgia trip and a fresh adventure, proof that O'Malley's creation still has plenty of fight left in it.
