The U.S. government has officially confirmed a landmark $4.3 billion battery supply deal between Tesla and South Korea's LG Energy Solution, and Canada is right in the middle of it.
LG Energy Solution owns and operates NextStar Energy, a battery cell factory in Windsor, Ontario that has already produced one million battery cells since starting up in November 2025. The company's North American manufacturing footprint makes it a key player in the shift away from Chinese battery supply chains.
The Deal Details
The agreement calls for LG Energy Solution to supply lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells to a new $4.3 billion manufacturing facility in Lansing, Michigan, set to launch production in 2027. Those cells will power Tesla's Megapack 3 energy storage systems, produced at Tesla's Houston facility.
U.S. officials framed the deal as a win for domestic energy security and a deliberate move to reduce American dependence on Chinese battery imports, particularly as tariffs on Chinese goods make North American supply chains more economically attractive.
Windsor's Role in the Energy Transition
For Windsor and the broader Canadian auto sector, the NextStar factory represents a significant piece of the electric vehicle supply chain puzzle. The facility is part of a wave of battery manufacturing investment that Canada has been courting aggressively, positioning itself as a key supplier to both Canadian and American automakers making the switch to electric vehicles.
The milestone of one million battery cells produced is a signal that the Windsor plant is operating at meaningful scale, a reassuring sign for a sector that has seen some EV investments stumble elsewhere.
Why It Matters for Canada
As the North American auto industry restructures around electrification, battery manufacturing has become one of the most strategically important sectors in the economy. Canada's mineral wealth, skilled workforce, and proximity to U.S. automakers put it in a strong position to capture a large share of that supply chain, and deals like this one show that position is being realized.
