TFSA for Newcomers: How Contribution Room Works When You Arrive in Canada

The Key Rule for Newcomers

If you were born in Canada and turned 18 before 2009, you may have over $95,000 in accumulated TFSA room. But if you're a newcomer who arrived in Canada recently, your situation is different.

TFSA contribution room only accumulates for years in which you are a Canadian resident. Years you lived outside Canada before arriving don't count, even if you were 18 or older.

This applies to permanent residents, certain temporary residents, and new citizens alike.

When Does Your Room Start?

Your room starts accumulating on January 1 of the year you became a Canadian resident: or January 1 of the year you turned 18, whichever is later.

Example: You arrived in Canada on September 15, 2023 as a permanent resident, and you were already 25 years old. Your TFSA room starts accumulating as of January 1, 2023. By January 1, 2026, you'd have three years of room: 2023 ($6,500) + 2024 ($7,000) + 2025 ($7,000) = $20,500 in available room.

Note: the $7,000 for 2026 adds on January 1, 2026, bringing your total to $27,500.

What If You're a Temporary Resident?

Temporary residents (such as those on a work permit or student visa) can also open a TFSA and accumulate room, as long as you have a valid SIN. However, if you leave Canada and become a non-resident, you stop accumulating room. Also, if you continue to contribute while a non-resident, you're charged a 1% per month penalty on those contributions. It's best to stop contributing to your TFSA if you leave Canada.

How to Check Your Exact Room

Log into your CRA My Account at canada.ca/my-cra-account. The TFSA section shows your current available room based on what the CRA has on file. If your immigration status was complicated or changed, it's worth calling the CRA directly at 1-800-267-6999 to confirm.

Ottawa Tip: Get Your SIN Quickly

You can't open a TFSA without a SIN. In Ottawa, you can apply for your SIN at Service Canada locations. There's one at 131 Queen Street and others around the city. Bring your immigration documents. The process usually takes less than an hour and you'll get your SIN the same day.

Once you have your SIN, go open a TFSA immediately, every year of residency you delay is a year of contribution room you could have been accumulating.

Practical First Steps

  1. Get your SIN at a Service Canada location in Ottawa
  2. Open a TFSA at your bank or at an online bank like EQ Bank
  3. Check your available room in CRA My Account
  4. Contribute up to your room, start with a high-interest savings account if you're still settling in
  5. As your finances stabilize, consider shifting some contributions to investments

The TFSA is one of the most immigrant-friendly financial tools Canada offers. You get the same benefits as someone born here, just starting from your arrival date.
