Drew Baglino, the former Tesla Senior Vice President of Powertrain and Energy Engineering, is not taking any time off from the energy transition. Just over a year after leaving one of the world's most recognized electric vehicle companies, Baglino has launched Sadi Thermal Machines — a startup focused on heat pump technology.
The announcement marks his second new venture since exiting Tesla in 2024. Baglino is already serving as CEO of Heron Power, a clean energy company. Adding a heat pump startup to his portfolio signals a clear thesis: the decarbonization of heating and cooling is the next major frontier in the global energy transition.
Why Heat Pumps, and Why Now?
Heat pumps have quietly become one of the hottest sectors in clean energy. Unlike traditional furnaces and air conditioners, heat pumps move heat rather than generate it — making them dramatically more efficient. They can heat buildings in winter, cool them in summer, and in some configurations, heat water and support industrial processes.
Governments worldwide — from the European Union to the United States — have poured billions into heat pump adoption as a core pillar of their net-zero strategies. The International Energy Agency has called heat pumps critical to meeting global climate targets, and sales have surged across Europe and North America in recent years.
With that tailwind, it's no surprise that a talent heavy-hitter like Baglino is entering the space. His decade-plus at Tesla gave him deep experience scaling complex electromechanical systems — expertise that translates directly to the engineering challenges of next-generation heat pump design.
Sadi Thermal: What We Know
Details about Sadi Thermal Machines remain sparse at this early stage. The name appears to be a nod to Sadi Carnot, the 19th-century French physicist whose work on heat engines laid the theoretical groundwork for modern thermodynamics — a fitting tribute for a company aiming to push the boundaries of thermal efficiency.
Baglino has not yet detailed the specific technology approach, target markets, or funding status for Sadi Thermal. But the mere fact that a founder of his calibre — with direct experience building Tesla's battery and powertrain divisions — is entering the heat pump space will likely draw significant investor attention.
A Crowded but Critical Space
Sadi Thermal enters a competitive landscape. Startups like Gradient Comfort, Harvest Thermal, and Quilt are already working to reimagine residential heat pump systems, while industrial players like Emerson and Bosch dominate the commercial side. What Baglino brings is a reputation for scaling hardware at extraordinary pace — something few founders in the space can claim.
The heat pump sector also faces real-world adoption challenges: upfront costs remain high, installation complexity can deter homeowners, and cold-climate performance has historically lagged behind gas heating.
