The Remake Trilogy Gets Its Final Chapter

After years of anticipation, Square Enix pulled back the curtain on Final Fantasy VII Revelation at Summer Game Fest Live — confirming the title, platforms, and release window for the concluding entry in one of gaming's most ambitious remake projects.

Set to arrive in spring 2027, Revelation will launch simultaneously on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2, making it one of the most broadly accessible entries in the series' history.

What Was Shown

The reveal footage packed in a staggering number of fan-pleasing moments. Players will finally get to pilot the Highwind, the iconic airship from the original 1997 game, and can leap from it directly into the open world below — a sequence that immediately drew comparisons to the kind of cinematic freedom the original only hinted at.

Two beloved characters who sat out of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's playable roster are returning to active duty: Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind will both be fully playable in combat. Their inclusion rounds out the party that fans have been waiting to control since the remake project began with Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020.

The footage also confirmed the return of the Weapons — the colossal, world-threatening creatures from the original game — as major boss encounters, and showed off visits to Wutai, the far-east inspired nation that played a significant role in the original's lore but was largely sidelined in earlier remake entries.

In classic Final Fantasy fashion, players will also be able to dress up party members in a variety of armor and costumes, continuing the beloved (and frequently ridiculous) costume system from Rebirth.

A Trilogy Six Years in the Making

The Final Fantasy VII remake project launched in April 2020 with the episodic first entry, covering the Midgar section of the original game. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth followed in February 2024, expanding dramatically into the open world beyond Midgar and receiving widespread critical acclaim.

Revelation is expected to cover the remainder of the original game's story — including its legendary, emotionally devastating finale — though Square Enix has kept story details tightly under wraps.

The decision to release across all major platforms simultaneously, including Nintendo's new hardware, signals a major shift from the PlayStation-first exclusivity window that defined the first two entries. It's a move likely to bring the concluding chapter to the widest possible audience.

Why It Matters

Final Fantasy VII is widely regarded as one of the most influential video games ever made. Its original 1997 release helped define the RPG genre for a generation, and the ongoing remake project has been a landmark undertaking — reimagining not just the game's visuals and gameplay, but expanding its story and characters in meaningful ways.

With Revelation, Square Enix will have the opportunity to deliver a conclusion that satisfies both those who grew up with Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa in the late '90s, and the new generation of players who discovered them through the remakes.

Spring 2027 can't come soon enough.
