Hawaii's Kilauea volcano roared to life again this week in spectacular fashion, sending lava fountains 400 metres into the sky, the 43rd fountaining episode since the volcano resumed erupting back in December 2024.

Smoke plumes climbed 25,000 feet above sea level, triggering temporary closures of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and a stretch of Highway 11, as volcanic fragments and ash rained down on surrounding areas.

A Show of Geological Force

Kilauea sits on Hawaii's Big Island and is widely considered one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. This latest eruption continued a pattern of intense, periodic lava fountaining events that have characterized the current eruptive period. Some episodes have lasted a few days; others just a few hours, the unpredictability is part of what makes monitoring such a critical task.

The good news: the lava has remained confined to the summit crater and "hasn't threatened homes or buildings," according to officials. That's a crucial distinction on an island where eruptions can sometimes threaten communities directly.

County officials opened an emergency shelter as a precaution, though it had no initial occupants. Previous eruption events have left communities dealing with ash buildup serious enough to require civil defense assistance to clear from homes and water catchment systems.
