Ottawa privacy-conscious users have a new reason to pay attention to Meta's AI tools, the creator of Signal, the gold standard of encrypted messaging, is now working to bring end-to-end encryption to Meta AI.
Moxie Marlinspike, the cryptographer who built Signal into the world's most trusted private messaging app, has reportedly been collaborating with Meta to design encryption infrastructure for the company's growing suite of AI products. The move is unusual, Meta is not exactly known for its commitment to user privacy, but the involvement of one of the world's foremost encryption experts signals something potentially significant.
What Is Meta AI?
Meta AI is the artificial intelligence assistant baked into WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook. Hundreds of millions of people worldwide already use it to ask questions, draft messages, and get recommendations, often without fully thinking through how that data is being handled. Unlike traditional search engines or apps, AI assistants process deeply personal queries that can reveal health concerns, relationship issues, financial stress, and more.
Why Encryption Matters Here
Most AI services today process your queries on remote servers in plaintext, meaning the company (and potentially anyone with access) can read exactly what you asked. End-to-end encryption for AI would change that fundamentally. Your queries would be encrypted on your device before being sent, processed in a privacy-preserving way, and returned to you without Meta ever seeing the raw content.
This is technically complex. AI models require enormous compute resources that don't fit on a phone. The challenge Marlinspike is reportedly working on is how to run AI inference on powerful servers while keeping the actual content of user queries cryptographically hidden, even from the company running the servers.

For Ottawa's large community of government workers, defence contractors, and tech professionals, the question of AI privacy is anything but abstract. Many federal employees already operate under strict policies about which AI tools they can use and what information they can share with them. The prospect of genuinely encrypted AI, where not even the service provider can see your queries, could eventually change those conversations.
Privacy advocates in Ottawa's tech community have long pointed out the tension between AI utility and data security. Tools like Signal have demonstrated that you don't have to choose between a great product and strong privacy protections. The company still generates the vast majority of its revenue from advertising powered by user data. Encrypted AI queries wouldn't necessarily prevent Meta from learning about you in other ways.
But the technical direction is promising. Signal's track record, it's used by journalists, politicians, and human rights workers around the world precisely because it works, lends real credibility to whatever encryption architecture Marlinspike helps design.
For Ottawa users already comfortable with Signal for their most sensitive conversations, this development is worth watching. The line between private messaging and private AI is blurring, and the people building the best tools for one are now working on the other.
