Ottawa has been a leader in exploring smart road maintenance technology, including sensors that allow for more precise brine application before storms, reducing the total salt volume while maintaining road safety. But advocates say scaling up these programs quickly enough to meaningfully protect urban water quality before melt season peaks remains a challenge.
