Russia Is Targeting Ukraine's Railways, and It's Becoming a Critical Pressure Point
Russia has significantly stepped up drone strikes on Ukraine's railway network, targeting critical supply lines and economic infrastructure in a deliberate strategy aimed at grinding down Ukraine's ability to sustain its military operations and civilian population simultaneously.

Why Railways Are So Strategically Important
Ukraine's rail network is one of the few pieces of pre-war infrastructure that has remained largely functional throughout the conflict. Its broad-gauge tracks (incompatible with Western European rail, which complicates some logistics) nonetheless serve as the primary channel for getting military equipment from Polish borders to front-line positions.
Russian attacks on this network force Ukraine to divert enormous resources to rapid repair, Ukrainian rail workers have become world-class at overnight track and bridge repairs, but the cumulative damage is beginning to show.
Can the Attacks Be Stopped?
Ukraine's air defence capacity is stretched thin defending cities, power grid infrastructure, and now rail. Western allies have been supplying additional systems, but the sheer volume of Russian drone production, largely using Iranian-sourced components, with some domestic production now ramping up, means Ukrainian defenders cannot intercept everything.
Canada's Continued Support
Canada has been among Ukraine's most consistent supporters, having committed billions in military and financial assistance since the 2022 invasion. Canadian Forces have been training Ukrainian troops in the UK under Operation UNIFIER, and Canadian-manufactured weapons systems have been part of the aid packages delivered.
For the Ukrainian-Canadian community, one of the largest outside Ukraine itself, with a particularly significant presence in Ottawa, Winnipeg, and Edmonton, the railway strikes represent a direct attack on the country their families came from. Community organizations have renewed calls on Ottawa to accelerate delivery of promised military aid, particularly air defence systems, that could help protect critical infrastructure.
