Saudi Arabia and UAE Condemn Iran's Missile and Drone Strikes at UN Security Council
Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates publicly condemned Iran's missile and drone attacks at an emergency United Nations Security Council session on March 12, deepening the fault lines in what was once a carefully managed Gulf diplomatic equilibrium.
The ambassadors of both countries spoke ahead of a rare emergency session called to address the rapidly escalating conflict, making clear that despite historic tensions with Israel and the United States, they view Iran's retaliatory strikes, including attacks on fuel infrastructure in Bahrain and drone interceptions near Saudi oilfields, as a regional threat they cannot ignore.
Gulf States Between a Rock and a Hard Place
The condemnations mark a significant moment. Saudi Arabia had, just two years ago, normalized diplomatic relations with Iran through a landmark Chinese-brokered agreement. The UAE had similarly pursued a policy of regional de-escalation. Both countries now find themselves on the opposite side of an Iranian regime that is striking back against US and Israeli air campaigns targeting its nuclear and military infrastructure.
Bahrain, meanwhile, reported attacks on fuel storage tanks within its territory, a direct hit on the tiny island nation's critical energy infrastructure. The attacks dramatically underscored that no Gulf state is immune from blowback.
Oil Markets and Global Supply Chains
The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20 percent of the world's oil passes, has become a flashpoint. Iranian naval activity in the waterway has spiked, causing insurance premiums for commercial shipping to soar and sending oil prices to multi-year highs.
The Ottawa and Canadian Connection
For Canada, the Gulf crisis has immediate and tangible economic consequences. Canadian consumers are already seeing gas prices spike at the pump. Ottawa drivers reported averages above $1.90/L this week, as global crude benchmarks jump on supply disruption fears.
Canada's oil sector in Alberta and Saskatchewan is simultaneously experiencing a windfall, with Western Canadian Select trading at a significant premium compared to earlier in the year. Federal politicians have faced uncomfortable questions about whether Ottawa should be accelerating pipeline approvals to capitalize on the moment, or whether doing so would signal an embrace of fossil fuel dependence at exactly the wrong time.
The Security Council session ended without a binding resolution, with Russia and China blocking Western-backed motions condemning Iran's strikes while the US vetoed language criticizing the original US-Israel campaign.
