Spain Formally Withdraws Its Ambassador to Israel Over Ongoing Military Operations
Spain has formally dismissed its ambassador to Israel and announced its Tel Aviv embassy will be led by a chargé d'affaires, completing a diplomatic downgrade first signalled six months ago that represents one of the most significant ruptures between a major European state and Israel in recent memory.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's government recalled its ambassador in the fall of 2025 amid the Gaza conflict, but the formal dismissal converts what was a temporary protest measure into an established diplomatic fact. Spain now joins a growing list of countries, including Colombia, Bolivia, and South Africa. That have downgraded or severed diplomatic relations with Israel over its military operations.
Spain Among Europe's Most Vocal Critics
Spain has been the most outspoken of Western European governments in its criticism of Israeli military operations, with Sánchez personally making statements that have drawn sharp rebukes from Jerusalem and from some of Madrid's European partners. Spain has also supported the South Africa-led genocide case at the International Court of Justice and has been among the voices pressing the EU to suspend its trade association agreement with Israel.
The formal withdrawal of the ambassador escalates Spain's position from rhetorical criticism to concrete diplomatic action.
European Divisions Laid Bare
The move underscores the deep divisions within the European Union on the Israel question. While Spain and Ireland have been among the most critical, Germany has been more cautious, the UK more circumspect, and Central European states more supportive of Israel. The EU's inability to speak with one voice has significantly diminished its diplomatic leverage.
Canada's Comparable Calculus
Canada has not recalled its ambassador to Israel and has not made moves toward such a downgrade. Ottawa's position, calls for civilian protection, support for a two-state solution, criticism of settlements, is sympathetic to Palestinian rights in language but has not translated into concrete diplomatic actions of the kind Spain is now taking.
This creates periodic friction with Canadian civil society groups and some parliamentarians who argue Canada's rhetoric should be matched by action. The comparison to Spain is often invoked in these debates. Spain is a NATO member, an EU state, and a close Western ally, and yet it has taken steps Ottawa has declined to match.
For Canada's sizable Arab and Muslim communities, including many in the Ottawa region, Spain's action is pointed proof that meaningful diplomatic responses are possible within the Western alliance framework.
