WeRoad Lands $58M to Cross the Atlantic

A European travel startup that has quietly built a loyal following among young solo travellers is now setting its sights on the world's biggest tourism market. WeRoad, the Milan-based group travel company, has raised a $58 million Series C round led by none other than Airbnb — and it's using the cash to make its North American debut.

The new funding brings WeRoad's total capital raised to roughly $100 million. The company is starting its U.S. push in Austin, Texas, a city known for its youthful, adventure-minded demographic and strong travel culture.

What Is WeRoad, Exactly?

WeRoad is best described as a group travel platform built for adults who want the spontaneity of solo travel without the loneliness of going it alone. The model is simple: travellers sign up for curated trips — think hiking in Patagonia, road-tripping through Morocco, or island-hopping in Southeast Asia — and are grouped with other like-minded people in their 25–45 age bracket.

Every trip is led by a "Coordinator," typically someone who applied to lead a group rather than a professional tour guide. The idea is that trips feel like adventures with new friends rather than guided bus tours.

Founded in Milan in 2017, WeRoad has since expanded across Europe, operating in the UK, Spain, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Portugal. It claims tens of thousands of travellers have used the platform, with high rates of repeat bookings — a strong signal that the experience resonates.

Why Airbnb Is Betting on WeRoad

Airbnb's involvement is notable. The short-term rental giant has long been interested in expanding beyond accommodation into broader travel experiences — its Airbnb Experiences product was an early step in that direction. Backing WeRoad represents a deeper move into the social and experiential travel space.

For Airbnb, the investment is both strategic and financial. WeRoad travellers need places to stay, and there's a natural alignment between a platform that books group adventures and one that offers unique homes and local stays around the world.

The US Challenge

Expanding into the United States is no small feat. The American travel market is enormous and fragmented, with established players ranging from G Adventures and Intrepid Travel to newer app-based competitors. WeRoad will need to build brand awareness essentially from scratch in a country where it's largely unknown.

Austin makes sense as a beachhead: it's a major city with a young, transient population, a strong culture of outdoor adventure, and relatively high disposable income among its tech-sector workforce. If WeRoad can crack Austin, expansion to cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago becomes a natural next step.

Group Travel Is Having a Moment

The timing isn't accidental. Post-pandemic, solo travellers — particularly millennials and Gen Z — have shown a strong preference for shared experiences over traditional package holidays. Platforms that combine community with curation are seeing consistent growth, and investors are taking notice.

WeRoad's Series C is the latest in a string of significant raises for the social travel sector, suggesting that the days of the solitary backpacker hunched over a Lonely Planet may be giving way to something more connected.

Whether WeRoad can replicate its European success on American soil remains to be seen — but with $58 million and Airbnb in its corner, it's arriving with serious firepower.
