A million-to-one landing
It sounds like something out of a viral prank video, but it actually happened in rural Saskatchewan: a cellphone fell out of an airplane mid-flight, plummeted roughly 1.1 kilometres to the ground, and was later found sitting in a canola field in near-perfect condition.
Heather Cline and David Stanchuk shared the story with CBC's The National, describing the moment they realized their phone had slipped from the aircraft and the improbable search that followed to track it down.
How does a phone even survive that?
A fall of over a kilometre would seem like a death sentence for any piece of consumer electronics, let alone a glass-and-metal smartphone. But according to Cline and Stanchuk's account, the device came out of the ordeal largely unscathed — a detail that has stunned viewers and sparked plenty of conversation about just how tough modern phones can be when physics catches a lucky break.
