A Big Win for Driverless Tech
Self-driving cars just got a major vote of confidence. A new study from the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that Waymo's autonomous vehicles were involved in 68 per cent fewer crashes than human drivers over a three-year period, based on data collected across four American cities.
The research is one of the largest real-world looks yet at how driverless technology stacks up against people behind the wheel — and the results are hard to ignore. Fewer crashes means fewer injuries, less property damage, and potentially lower insurance costs down the road, all outcomes that matter well beyond U.S. borders.
Why Canadians Should Pay Attention
Canada doesn't yet have Waymo vehicles on its roads, but the technology is inching closer to home. Companies developing autonomous vehicle systems have been testing in Canadian conditions for years, including cold-weather and winter-driving trials that are especially relevant given our climate. Ontario has also been a hub for autonomous vehicle pilot programs, with the province allowing regulated testing on public roads since 2016.
Safety data like this IIHS study matters a great deal for Canadian regulators. Transport Canada and provincial ministries will likely lean on studies exactly like this one when deciding how — and how fast — to expand self-driving vehicle rules. If the crash-reduction numbers hold up under more scrutiny, it strengthens the case for allowing more autonomous vehicle testing and eventual commercial deployment in Canadian cities.

The IIHS analysis compared crash rates involving Waymo's driverless fleet against typical human driving patterns in similar urban environments. A 68 per cent reduction is a striking figure, though experts note that self-driving vehicles still operate under geofenced conditions — meaning they're deployed in specific, mapped areas rather than everywhere human drivers go. That's an important caveat for anyone extrapolating these results to snowy, unpredictable Canadian winters or rural highway driving, conditions quite different from the sunny, well-mapped streets where Waymo currently operates.
Still, the direction of the data is significant. Fewer crashes in real-world conditions, over a multi-year sample, is exactly the kind of evidence that safety regulators and insurers want to see before greenlighting wider adoption.
The Road Ahead
Don't expect driverless taxis roaming Ottawa or Toronto anytime soon — Canada's regulatory approach tends to be more cautious than the U.S., and winter driving conditions add real complexity that companies like Waymo haven't fully proven themselves against yet. But as more data rolls in showing autonomous vehicles outperforming human drivers on safety, pressure will grow on Canadian policymakers to figure out a path forward.
