Ottawa police are investigating a shooting that left a man in his 20s with life-threatening injuries in the city's south end early Saturday morning.

Officers were called to the 1600 block of Bank Street, near the Riverside South and Alta Vista area, shortly after 3 a.m. on September 12. When they arrived, they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics rushed him to hospital, where he remains in life-threatening condition.

The Ottawa Police Service's Guns and Gangs Unit has taken over the investigation, a sign investigators believe the shooting may be connected to firearms activity the unit typically tracks across the city. No arrests have been announced, and police have not released a suspect description or a possible motive.

Bank Street is one of Ottawa's longest and busiest corridors, running from the Rideau Canal all the way south past the airport, and the 1600 block sits in a stretch lined with plazas, restaurants and apartment buildings. An overnight shooting in that area is likely to rattle residents who use the strip day and night, and police will be looking for anyone who was in the area around 3 a.m. and may have seen or heard something.

Investigations led by the Guns and Gangs Unit can take time to develop, especially when they begin with a victim who has not yet been able to speak with investigators. Anyone with information, including dash cam or security camera footage from the area, is encouraged to contact Ottawa police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

This is the kind of story ottown will keep following. If police release updates on the victim's condition, an arrest, or new details about what led up to the shooting, we'll update this report.
