Ottawa residents watching their budgets closely this fall have another payment date to circle on the calendar. The next Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit payment is scheduled for October 5, 2026, according to a post from local account @shottawa.tv, which flagged the update for followers this week.
The benefit is the rebranded successor to the long-running GST/HST credit, a quarterly, tax-free payment aimed at helping low- and modest-income Canadians offset the cost of everyday essentials. For the 2026-27 benefit year, the maximum annual amounts break down to $679 for a single individual, $890 for a married or common-law couple, and up to $234 for each eligible child under 19.
What it means for Ottawa
With grocery prices and rent still squeezing household budgets across the city, from Vanier to Barrhaven, this kind of federal top-up matters more than it might have a few years ago. Ottawa has one of the higher costs of living among mid-sized Canadian cities, and a payment landing right at the start of October can help offset back-to-school costs still working their way through family budgets, along with the seasonal jump in heating and grocery bills as the weather turns.
Eligibility for the benefit is determined automatically through a household's annual tax return, so there's no separate application needed for most Ottawa residents. The Canada Revenue Agency calculates the amount based on net family income and the number of children registered for the Canada Child Benefit, with payments issued directly by direct deposit or cheque.
When and how it arrives
The October 5 date follows the CRA's usual quarterly schedule for this credit, which typically pays out in January, April, July and October. Households who haven't received a past payment despite believing they're eligible are generally advised to check their CRA My Account for updated banking and mailing information well before the payment date.
As always with a program tied to tax filings, the amount someone in Kanata or Orleans receives can differ significantly from a single filer downtown, depending on income and family size. Residents who aren't sure whether they qualify can check their most recent Notice of Assessment or log into their CRA account directly for a personalized breakdown.
