Ottawa residents woke up this week to a familiar sight: campaign signs lining boulevards and front lawns across the city. Candidates running for mayor, city council and school board trustee seats were permitted to start posting signs on September 11, kicking off the visible phase of the 2026 municipal campaign.
Why the Signs Appeared Overnight
Municipal election rules set a fixed date before which signs cannot go up, so campaigns across Ottawa's wards timed their sign crews to hit the streets right at midnight. That's why so many corners and medians seemed to fill up all at once.
