A Different Kind of Team Day
Ottawa companies searching for a team building activity with more substance than an escape room now have an option that puts staff to work on an actual construction site. Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa runs corporate Team Build Days, pairing company teams of up to 10 employees with a full day of construction work on a Habitat build site.
What the Day Involves
Habitat handles the logistics so no one needs to show up with tools or experience. The organization provides orientation and safety training, on-site supervision, all necessary tools and equipment, safety gear, and a catered lunch for participants. The experience is designed to be accessible to everyone, regardless of construction background, so a team of office workers can spend the day framing, building or finishing a home meant for a local family.
At the end of the day, teams also receive a group photo and a Habitat T-shirt to commemorate the work.
An Ottawa Example
The Ottawa Construction Association has already taken part, joining a Habitat build in Ottawa's east end where the team helped put up basement walls in two homes. It is the kind of project that puts an industry group's own skills directly into a build that will house an Ottawa family, rather than a one-off volunteer gesture.
Why Companies Are Signing Up
Habitat Greater Ottawa's Director of Fund Development, Shawna Blanchard, said the appeal goes beyond the physical work itself. "There's something really powerful about bringing a group of colleagues together to accomplish something that matters," she said. "A Habitat Build Day gives teams the chance to connect in a completely different environment."
For Ottawa employers, that means trading a hotel meeting room or a trust-fall exercise for a job site where the results are visible and permanent: walls, framing and progress on a home that will eventually shelter a local family working toward affordable homeownership.
A Program for Women, Too
Habitat Greater Ottawa also runs a Women Build program alongside its corporate offering. Participating teams raise funds and take part in a Habitat Build Day focused on empowerment, solidarity and leadership, giving women in the workplace a version of the same hands-on build experience built around those themes.
The Fine Print
Across both programs, Habitat Greater Ottawa's own program page confirms groups are capped at up to 10 team members per Team Build Day, keeping the crews small enough for real supervision and a genuinely hands-on day rather than a crowd standing around a job site.
