Ottawa police are mourning the loss of a 25-year-old man who died after a late-night swim at Britannia Beach turned tragic this week.
According to Ottawa Police Service, emergency crews were called to the Britannia Beach area at approximately 7:54 p.m. Tuesday after reports that a man had entered the Ottawa River and had not resurfaced. Officers and search crews moved quickly to the last known location, and later that evening members of the Ottawa Police Marine, Dive and Trails Unit located the man deceased in the water.
Police say there is no indication of foul play or suspicious circumstances, and the man's identity has not been released.
A beach without lifeguards
What makes this loss especially hard to take is the timing. The City of Ottawa's supervised beach season at Britannia wrapped up on August 30, meaning there were no lifeguards on duty when the man went into the water that evening. Even during the height of summer, supervision only runs from noon until 7 p.m., leaving the river unwatched well before dark on any given day.
Britannia Beach is one of Ottawa's most popular riverfront spots, drawing swimmers, paddlers and sunset-watchers all summer long. But the Ottawa River is a working waterway with currents, cold pockets and depth changes that aren't always obvious from the shore, and those risks don't disappear once the lifeguard chairs are packed away for the season.
A community in mourning
News of the death spread quickly after Ottawa-based Instagram account @shottawa.tv shared the story with followers, writing that an "8pm swim at Britannia Beach turned tragic" and offering condolences to everyone affected. The post drew an outpouring of sympathy from Ottawa residents in the comments, many of whom know the beach well from summer weekends spent along its shoreline.
