Ottawa's NCC Weekend Bikedays program is doing more than clearing the road for cyclists, it's actually cleaning the air, according to a new Carleton University study.
What the study found
Researchers gathered data over six days in June and July 2025, comparing conditions on days when Queen Elizabeth Driveway was closed to motorized traffic against days when it remained open. The closed days showed measurable reductions in both air pollutants and noise levels.
Why it matters for Ottawa
For a city where Weekend Bikedays has become a summer staple along the Rideau Canal corridor, the findings give the NCC's car-free programming a scientific backing beyond its popularity with walkers and cyclists.
