A last day of lineups
Throughout the day, longtime customers formed lines for one more taste before the Papadopoulos family, who owned and operated the bakery, worked their final shift. Natalie Esau, who owns the nearby Upkeep Shoppe spa, was one of the regulars who came by for a final order, a village salad with chicken along with some baked goods. She described the experience as emotional, saying she'd "put my sun glasses on" to hide her tears. Esau said the closure was about more than losing a favourite lunch spot. "It's about the community," she said, noting the bakery had served as a meeting place where friendships formed and people connected across 15 years.
Another regular, Tom Rizakos, who moved to the Ottawa area from Montreal a decade ago, kept visiting the bakery at least twice a week even after he relocated to Gatineau. That kind of loyalty, driving across the river for a favourite bakery run, says a lot about how much of a draw the shop had become well beyond its own block in Little Italy.
Rising costs behind the closure
Esau pointed to rising costs as the reason behind the shutdown, saying business has looked different since the pandemic, with expenses running much higher than they used to. It's a familiar story for small, family-run food businesses across Ottawa, where rent, ingredients and labour have all climbed in recent years, squeezing operators who built their name on quality food at an accessible price.
What's next for Nutty Greek
The bakery's own website confirms the September 19 closing date after 15 years of serving Ottawa, and points followers toward its Instagram (@nuttygreek) and Facebook (/nuttygreek) pages for updates on what it calls its "next chapter." No details on a relaunch, a new location, or a new format have been announced yet, leaving regulars watching social media for word on whether the Papadopoulos family plans to reopen in some form.
An Ottawa institution
For 15 years, the Nutty Greek Bake Shop was more than a bakery in Little Italy, it was a stop that regulars built into their weekly routines, whether they lived around the corner or, like Rizakos, drove in from Gatineau.
