Ottawa's Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), the country's largest federal public sector union, has placed the Canada Employment and Immigration Union (CEIU) into trusteeship, citing serious concerns about how the component has been run.

PSAC President Sharon DeSousa announced the move this week, pointing to problems with "governance and fiduciary operations" within CEIU as the reason for the intervention. A trusteeship is one of the most significant steps a parent union can take against one of its components, effectively suspending the elected leadership's authority and handing day-to-day control to a trustee appointed by PSAC's national leadership.
CEIU represents thousands of workers across Employment and Social Development Canada, Service Canada, and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, meaning the fallout from this decision will be felt by federal employees processing everything from EI claims to immigration applications.
