Ottawa classrooms are on the front lines of a debate playing out across the country: with generative AI tools now just a tap away, how do we make sure students still know how to think critically instead of just accepting whatever an algorithm spits out?
It's a question local school boards, from the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board to the Ottawa Catholic School Board, are increasingly being pushed to answer as AI use among students becomes the norm rather than the exception. Teachers across the city report that tools like ChatGPT are now woven into how many students approach homework, research, and even brainstorming — which means the old assumption that kids will naturally pick up critical thinking skills along the way no longer holds up.
The push for explicit teaching
Education researchers say the solution isn't banning AI outright — that ship has largely sailed — but rather being far more deliberate about teaching critical thinking as its own explicit skill, starting in elementary school and carrying through to post-secondary. Rather than assuming students will absorb the ability to question sources, spot bias, or evaluate evidence just by osmosis, advocates argue teachers need dedicated lesson time devoted to why critical thinking matters and how to practise it.
That's a meaningful shift for Ottawa's education community, home to two large public school boards, two French-language boards, and major post-secondary institutions like the University of Ottawa and Carleton University — all of which are wrestling with how AI fits into coursework, essay writing, and research assignments.
What this looks like in practice
For younger students, that might mean lessons on how to compare multiple sources before trusting a claim, or simple exercises in identifying when information sounds too neat or too convenient. For older students heading toward university, it means learning to interrogate an AI-generated answer the same way they'd interrogate a biased news article or a sketchy Wikipedia edit — asking where the information came from, what might be missing, and whether it actually makes sense.
Ottawa parents have been raising similar concerns at school council meetings in recent months, worried that reliance on AI for homework help could quietly erode kids' willingness to sit with a hard problem before reaching for a shortcut. Local teachers, for their part, say the goal isn't to shame students for using these tools — most industries will expect familiarity with AI going forward — but to make sure using AI well requires the same skepticism and reasoning skills as using any other source.
A citywide conversation, not just a classroom one
With Ottawa's tech sector, including its sizeable AI and Kanata North presence, only accelerating adoption of these tools, local educators argue the stakes go beyond report cards. Students graduating into an Ottawa job market increasingly shaped by AI will need to know how to question, verify, and reason — not just prompt.
Expect this to remain an active conversation among Ottawa-area school boards and parent councils as they figure out curriculum updates for the year ahead.
