Ottawa residents who regularly drive the Highway 401 corridor toward Kingston are paying close attention to a new investigation launched by Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) after a police pursuit ended in tragedy.
What happened
The SIU says it is investigating the deaths of a man and a woman who were found dead inside a vehicle in South Frontenac, a township that sits along the same stretch of eastern Ontario many Ottawa drivers pass through on trips to Kingston, Toronto, or the Frontenac and Lennox and Addington cottage country beyond. According to the SIU, the pair had fled from Ontario Provincial Police officers before the fatal collision occurred.
The SIU is the independent civilian agency responsible for investigating incidents involving police in Ontario that result in death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault. That mandate covers the OPP detachments that patrol the highways connecting the National Capital Region to the rest of eastern Ontario, as well as Ottawa's own municipal police service.
