Ottawa's summer of 2026 is officially coming to a close. Fall arrives this week, and the shift has locals looking back on a season that, by most accounts, delivered everything a Canadian summer should: late sunsets, packed patios and no shortage of things to do.

Instagram account @shottawa.tv marked the occasion with a post capturing that end-of-summer feeling, writing that it was "a summer we won't forget," pointing to beach days, festivals and nights that "somehow never felt long enough." The post asked followers a simple question as the season winds down: how was your summer?

It's a fitting sendoff for a city that leans hard into its short but mighty warm season. Ottawa's summers are a sprint, and this year's lineup gave residents plenty of reasons to get outside. Patios across neighbourhoods like the ByWard Market, the Glebe and Westboro stayed busy well into the evening thanks to long daylight hours. Beaches along the Ottawa River, including Mooney's Bay and Westboro Beach, drew steady crowds on hot afternoons. And the city's packed festival calendar, from music to food to arts events downtown and along the canal, kept weekends full from June through early September.

For many Ottawans, the arrival of fall is bittersweet. The city trades patio season for its famously vivid autumn colours, with the Rideau Canal and Gatineau Park both drawing crowds once the leaves start to turn. But there's no denying summer holds a special place here, in part because it's over so quickly. Ottawa winters are long, which makes the stretch of warm months feel especially precious, and this year was no exception.

As @shottawa.tv's post suggests, the transition doesn't come without a little nostalgia. Late sunsets give way to earlier darkness, patio season gives way to sweater weather, and the beach days that defined July and August become memories to look back on until next year.
