Why Now?

The short answer is demand. AI companies need enormous amounts of computing power to train and run their models, and that computing power has to live somewhere. Canada has become an attractive spot for these projects thanks to a combination of relatively cheap electricity in some provinces, cooler climates that cut down on cooling costs, and political interest in positioning the country as a player in the global AI race.

Governments at the federal and provincial level have been courting this kind of investment, seeing it as a chance to bring jobs and tax revenue to communities that might not otherwise see this scale of infrastructure spending. That's part of why proposals have been landing in places that historically haven't hosted heavy industry.

The Backyard Problem

These facilities are physically massive — some sprawl across the footprint of dozens of football fields — and they consume staggering amounts of electricity and water for cooling. Residents near proposed sites have raised concerns about strain on local power grids, rising electricity costs for everyday customers, water usage in areas already managing supply carefully, noise from constant cooling systems, and the sheer visual and environmental footprint of the buildings themselves.

There's also a broader worry about whether the promised economic benefits — jobs, tax base — actually materialize at the scale companies pitch, since these facilities are highly automated and don't necessarily employ as many people as a traditional factory or warehouse might.

An Ontario Angle

Ontario has been part of this national conversation, with the province's power grid and IESO (the body that manages Ontario's electricity system) already fielding a growing list of connection requests from large-scale computing projects. With Ottawa's Kanata North tech corridor already home to a dense cluster of tech and telecom firms, and the National Capital Region's proximity to federal decision-makers on AI policy, the debate over where these facilities should — and shouldn't — go is one Ottawans may end up hearing a lot more about as provincial and municipal governments weigh in on future proposals.

What Happens Next

Expect this to remain a live issue as more projects get announced and communities push for more transparency around power usage, water consumption, and local approval processes. Provincial energy regulators are increasingly being asked to weigh in before these projects get greenlit, and public pushback has already delayed or reshaped some proposals elsewhere in the country.
