A State of Emergency Since 2024

Ginoogaming First Nation, in northwestern Ontario, declared a state of emergency in May 2024 over violence and drug trafficking affecting the community. Since then, the First Nation says it has spent $1.6 million of its own money on private security to try to keep residents safe.

A Policing Framework Takes Shape

The Ontario Provincial Police has now agreed in principle to develop a long-term, written policing framework to address the community's safety concerns, First Nation leaders say. Details on funding, timelines, and what the framework will include have not yet been announced.
