A bold pitch, a dimmer view from scientists
An American company has been making waves with an ambitious pitch: giant mirrors in orbit that reflect sunlight down to Earth, giving subscribers extra daylight whenever they want it. It sounds like something out of science fiction, but the company says the technology is real and in development. The problem, according to a growing number of astronomers in New Brunswick, is that "sunlight on demand" could come at a steep cost to the night sky everyone else relies on.
Why astronomers are worried
The concern isn't really about the daytime — it's about the night. Reflective satellites bright enough to throw usable light onto a patch of ground would also be visible, and disruptive, well beyond their intended target. Astronomers in New Brunswick argue that uncontrolled or poorly regulated deployment of these mirrors could introduce persistent streaks of reflected light into the night sky, the same problem that's already dogging astronomers worldwide because of the growing number of satellite constellations like Starlink. For professional observatories and amateur stargazers alike, a sky that's supposed to be dark becomes cluttered with artificial light sources that ruin long-exposure images and naked-eye observation alike.
There's also the ripple effect to consider. Once one company proves the concept works and starts selling "sunlight" as a service, opposition voices worry it opens the door to competitors doing the same thing, multiplying the number of reflective objects in orbit and compounding the light pollution problem.
A national issue, not just a New Brunswick one
While the loudest objections so far are coming out of New Brunswick, the implications reach across the country. Canada has some of the best remaining dark-sky preserves in the world, drawing stargazers, researchers, and astrotourism dollars to rural regions from the Maritimes to Ontario's own dark-sky reserves near places like Killarney Provincial Park. Any satellite technology that increases nighttime brightness on a large scale doesn't stop at provincial borders — a bright reflective object passing overhead is visible from wherever it's flying, meaning skies over Ottawa and the rest of Ontario could just as easily be affected as those in Atlantic Canada.
Canada currently has limited regulatory authority over foreign-launched satellites, which makes this less a local zoning dispute and more a question for federal regulators and international space governance bodies. Astronomers say that's exactly why they're speaking up now, before the technology moves from concept to full-scale deployment.
What happens next
For now, the mirrors remain a company promise rather than an operating system, but the scientific community isn't waiting to raise red flags. As commercial space ventures increasingly test the boundaries of what's allowed in orbit, Canadian astronomers are urging regulators to weigh in before technology like this becomes another fixture of an already crowded night sky.
