A Mother's Grief Turns to Advocacy

Leslie Tilley, a mother in Nova Scotia, says her daughter Barbara died after struggling for years to find addiction treatment that actually helped her. Tilley told CBC News that Barbara was never able to access long-term withdrawal management, the kind of sustained detox support that experts say is often needed for recovery to stick.

A Gap Felt Across Canada

"This is a girl that needed help," Tilley said, describing a system that offered short-term fixes but nothing built to last. Addiction service shortages like this aren't unique to Nova Scotia. Across the country, including in Ontario, families continue to report long waits and limited options for sustained detox and recovery care.
