A Forest That Looks Whole, But Isn't
When a logged forest is replanted or a drained wetland is rebuilt, success is usually measured by what's easy to see: tall trees, buzzing insects, birds flitting through the canopy. By that standard, many of Canada's restoration projects look like wins. But researchers digging deeper into these recovered ecosystems are finding a quieter problem — some of the tiniest and most overlooked organisms simply aren't returning.
Mosses, lichens and algae might not grab headlines the way old-growth pines or migratory songbirds do, but scientists say they're foundational to a healthy ecosystem. These small life forms help build soil, retain moisture, cycle nutrients and provide microhabitats for insects and fungi. When they're absent, a restored landscape may function less like the mature ecosystem it's meant to replace and more like an empty stage set — convincing from a distance, but missing the details that make it work.
The 'Invisible Extinction' Problem
The issue researchers are pointing to has been described as a kind of invisible extinction: species disappearing not with a dramatic collapse, but quietly, in ways that don't show up in standard restoration checklists. Most monitoring efforts track visible indicators — tree cover, water levels, bird counts — because they're easier to measure and communicate to funders and the public. Mosses and lichens, by contrast, require specialized expertise to identify and are rarely part of routine ecological surveys.
That gap matters because these organisms are often slow colonizers. Unlike fast-growing grasses or shrubs that can quickly recolonize a disturbed area, many lichens and mosses depend on very specific conditions — undisturbed soil crusts, stable microclimates, or nearby source populations — that can take decades to re-establish, if they return at all. A restoration project measured in years may simply not give these species the time or conditions they need.
Why This Matters for How Canada Restores Land
Canada has poured significant resources into ecological restoration in recent years, from wetland rebuilding in agricultural regions to reforestation efforts following logging and wildfire. These projects are often framed as climate and biodiversity wins, and in many respects they are. But the emerging research is a reminder that restoring an ecosystem's visible skeleton doesn't guarantee its full biological complexity comes back with it.
Scientists studying these gaps argue that restoration success shouldn't be judged solely by how a landscape looks or how many charismatic species return. A more complete picture means paying attention to the small, slow-growing, easily-overlooked organisms too — and building monitoring programs that can actually detect their absence in the first place.
For a country whose identity is deeply tied to its forests, boreal expanses and wetlands, the findings raise a bigger question: what does it really mean for a damaged landscape to be "restored"? Increasingly, ecologists say the answer depends on species most Canadians have never heard of.
